There have been many advancements in medical technologies in the country in recent times and according to Dr. Dhananjay Kumar, Interventional cardiologist, Bhagwan Mahavir Medica Superspeciality Hospital, Ranchi, heart patients in India need not have better awareness about the technologies available today for superior cardiac care.

Referring to HD IVUS, the doctor says, “Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) allows us to see a coronary artery from the inside out. This unique view provides us with critical clinical information that is not possible without imaging modalities.”
Dr Kumar adds that several studies conducted around the world also highlight that IVUS guided procedures are more accurate and even more cost effective.
The superiority of HD IVUS lies in its 3D detailed internal image transmission of the layers of all blood vessel.
The cross-section view provided by HD IVUS helps determine optimal placement and expansion of stent post the procedure to help reduce complications.
HD IVUS helps further by placing the highly advanced HD IVUS system which uses specific wavelengths of light to provide detailed images of the catheter. A tube equipped with a special probe or camera at one end which has ultrasound properties to capture the image of the inner aspect of blood vessels.
Real-time basis, says Dr Kumar, adding, “The other end of the tube is attached to a machine which converts the ultrasound mechanism and displays them on a monitor giving the surgeon a complete 360-degree internal view of the artery.”
Recently, there have been further advances in IVUS imaging with the introduction of new generation technologies which provide even sharper and high-definition images of the arteries helping doctors in diagnosis and treatment plan.
He adds that it is also advisable to use products such as drug eluting stents which help prevent re-narrowing of the arteries. The latest generation platinum chromium stents and polymer free stents also help provide better clinical outcomes even in complex cases.
Elaborating on the significance of HD IVUS Dr Kumar says, “This cross-section view enhances the understanding of the nature of blockage thus helping the doctor make informed decisions on treatment plan and determine the further help determine the optimal placement and expansion of the stent post procedure to help reduce complications and the incidence of stent thrombosis.”
